14th January Fred Briefing

We didn't get the Graphics Yearbook, so hopefully we will get Inter Dis, Fine Art or Photography (if they are printed books).
I got my grades 68% fred said we get to talk about that in out FMP tutorial next week. 2% of a 1st is annoying but at this point it isn't bothering me too much... but I definitely want a first class degree!

Revisited Briefs

After writing 11 briefs I have changed my mind a lot since then. I now know I have to create briefs that fit within my personal statement and this in the end is the last work I will create whilst at LCA. These briefs will decide if I go to D&AD, get freelance work and potentially find a full time job in the industry.
No Pressure.
  • Brief #1: Investigating Typeface design within branding small businesses including the Arts and Cultural Clients
  • Brief #2: Informational and Educational design for chosen random topics. Including styled Posters. Becoming a expert on something new.
  • Brief #3: Exploring Web Design and coding for small businesses
  • Brief #4: ISTD Books Still. Publication Design & Contemporary Trends using a subject of my choice
  • Brief #5: D&AD Make your Mark: Contacting your dream employer.
  • Brief #6: Design Context: Looking to contact a design studio or a freelancer in each country in the world. Maybe contacting more studios within the UK: One from each city and a couple from Bristol and Manchester. Designing questionnaire and asking for visit for more local design studios. I want my end product to be type and image based, half and half, maybe creating a website to house all my responses as a design hub.

YCN

I have no desire to do a YCN brief, as I researched them for OUGD301 and I found the becauseiamagirl brief boring, twee and clique.

D&AD Briefs

Definite No
Unilever
BBC

I think this is too twee and i do not like lipton, marmite, persil or simple. I dont feel like I have any want to work with these brands as I have no interest in them. BBC is a exploration of Web design, but I feel the BBC is a bit to mainstream and I don't feel like I have enough knowledge to add to this brief yet.

Maybe

Make Your Mark
It's Nice That
V&A
Dazed

Make your Mark is fun and is a sneaky way of getting self promotion to count as part of my grade for FMP. This sort of brief could be me branding myself and creating a great promotional print package to Bristol and Manchester Design Studios. I love 'It's Nice That' and to design something for this would be something I would want to have in my portfolio. It is a fun source that showcase a lot of new fresh talent. At first I thought V&A was a boring and uninteresting brief, but the board would be a image design that I think would be a short brief. It could be expanding to promotional material, V&A is a Museum and I wanted to do a Museum Branding and I wanted to improve my image skills. Dazed is also a potential short brief with a submission of just one image, this would also help me to expand my photography and image knowledge, something I would like to explore.

I prefer the D&AD briefs but I feel that they are way more diverse than the ISTD. With the ISTD briefs if you do not like the subject, you will not like the brief. Some are so open I do not want to try and tackle them.

ISDT Briefs

Surprised to see that there is only 5 briefs this year...
Definite No
Sound Bites
Circus

These briefs are both subjects I have no interest in. Dialects doesn't interest me and I feel that I would find it dull. Circus could be interesting as it a museum and a exhibition, but I have no interest in the circus and do not want to research a lot into it.

Maybe
Books Still? - would love to do
Food for thought?
Unsung Heros and Heroines

All of these briefs are very open and offer a lot of room for interpretation. Book still? is a great brief to experiment with contemporary publication design, including binding. I know I would enjoy this, I just need a subject / topic for the type. Food for thought is the one I am least enthusiastic about, as I'm not a massive fan of food, but I have seen publications with great use of paper craft and photography. I love food photography. I love the concept of Heros and Heroines, I could do a film interview??? The only thing is finding the content.

Like most briefs there are good and bad points to all. Going to analyse some D&AD briefs next to compare with.
