Photographing all of my Products

Today all of my FMP work was photographed by Lauren Danks (a second year photography student). Here is a selection of photographs we took together. I love the lighting we had, they look great on my boards.

Final Crit

Today was the final Crit.

After feeling not too bad about it last night. I went to bed and woke up at 10:30. The crit started at 9:30. For the past two months I've had really bad eczema and now I can't sleep because of it. 

So I had no feedback for the crit, but it helped being around peoples work and seeing where everyone else is up to. A few people have told me they like my Design Context book which is nice. I now know exactly what I have to do. It is a lot but I think I will get through it all. So here is another list:

So brief 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 and nearly finished. I will have everything finished (and printed) for Monday at the VERY VERY latest.

So that from Monday (maybe before) onwards I can start and complete Brief 4 (DRUGS) and finalise Brief 3. 

I have a photography student  photographing my final work on Thursday the 23rd. 6 days before deadline. Which gives me a lot of time to finish of my boards, and my PPD: portfolio and branding.

So much to do. But I think it is do-able.

Hannah's Website

Hannah already used tumblr as a website, but I designed her website and we found a developer who made it happen. She wanted her website to be simple and completely about her work, including both illustration and pattern together. This meant that her images needed to be full screen to maximise on impact, with minimum text information.

Her HR logo is used at the top left, on the navigation bar flush left on all pages of her website. Navigation can be by mouse or by just using the arrow keys alone. I designed a landscape website because I have seen them used for many creative freelancers and I feel the sideways scroll helps show direction. We were able to use quicksand on her website because it is a web-safe font. 

It was import for Hannah that her website would not only be used for showing her work portfolio, but as a link to Hannah's other online presence: twitter, blogger, pinterest and instergram.

Finishing Hannah's Branding

I've already designed and printed 150 business cards for Hannah using GFSmith stock, embossed logo and her stamp for her details. When handing them out at a event Hannah realised she needed cards that where very cheap to produce and had a sample of her designs on so that the person would remember who she was and what her work was life.
Below are examples of her latest prints.
I have printed landscape and portrait variations.

Hannah's won a competition and is going to New York next week. She's been printing her portfolio and getting her branding sorted.

Since you have no idea what has been happening here are some photographs of Hannah's design process. She's been a very busy bee and has been screen printing and digital printing like a crazy bee.

I've lazer cut into the green and blue GFSmith stock I used for her business cards to create a branding pack. The front is a cut out pineapple that is a window to her patterned business cards below. In her Hannah will keep her textile samples, cv, letterheads and business cards. I would maybe print some more that are smaller and thinner, but I am very happy with these.

The Crit with Fred

This went surprisingly well.
Basically.... 
Brief 1 (Séarlait) expand so it is two: branding & full typeface use.
Brief 3 - Hunter Gatherer, make full use of illustrations and use colour.
Brief 2 (Hannah), Brief 5 (Fashion Yearbook) and Brief 7 (Mosses Centre) Finish them for next week making sure when Inhand in they look consistently branded in a pack.
Brief 4 - DRUGS use colour. Going to make this a significant brief
Brief 6 - Context could be posters..... but I want to make a book. 

Finish Brief 1, 2, 5, 7 for next week, so I can focus on Brief 3, 4 and 6

Planning some more.

With less than 2 months left... 7 weeks to be near exact.
It makes me want to cry.... so I made a list of everything I have to do. 
Whilst working at home over Easter I managed to put together all of my final boards. So to do a short summary I have to photography Séarlait's and Hannah's branding (Brief 1 & 2)... then that is finished. I have submitted The Mosses Centre (Brief 7)
I am working with Chris Van, Cherry and Kirsty F on the Fashion yearbook which has now been scrapped to the 2nd choice. We are all working on poster designs and will have the final content on the 15th of April. (Brief 5)
So that leaves:
Hunter Gathers (Brief 3),
ISTD Books Still? DRUGS (Brief 4)
and Design Context (Brief 6).

I am creating the smaller guide today for Brief 3. I will print it this week and continue to gather all the content and design for the full publication. In this is need to create a mock up exhibition. Creating posters that focus on a certain group / person who survives somewhere in the world.

For DC (Brief 6) I am defining my final studio choices. I hope to get some answers to my questionnaires back asap.

What I need to Finish

Today I have designed all of my final boards for submission... very early, but now I know exactly what I have to do, and what I need to photograph. I have nearly finished both Séarlait's and Hannah's Branding brief.
For Séarlait's:
I have to Print her Portfolio and letterheads, Cv and Compliment Slip and Sticker more tools, lazer cut pencils and photograph all of the final products.

For Hannah: 
I have to make her website on cargo, order moo cards, create her mail out, print everything and photograph. This has to wait on her creating her FMP patterns. So as of now I cannot do anything.

Design Context: 
I need to email my questionnaire to all of the other studios I did not mail. 
I need to gather all of my content... but I want to wait until I hopefully get responses.

Hunter Gatherers:
Get all the content soon! Know what bind I will use. Start to draw / sketch images for the publication
Gather the content for the survival guide. 

ISTD: 
Gather Content.
Think about the publication layout.

Fashion Yearbook:
It's still up in the air if we will actually do the yearbook. It's looking like we may drop the whole brief. 

Binding Notebooks, Business Cards and Screen Printing a Apron

Today I made 7 sketchbooks for Hannah and Séarlait, these are a great way to extend the branding. Both students use sketchbooks heavily and this is a great opportunity to show off their branding.

At her event people could not read the business cards. Also she handed out over 50. 

We are going to order some business cards from Moo as samples that can be used at promotional / stall events. We will re emboss other business cards on off white, brown or grey stock so that they can be sent out or given out with samples and the colours will not clash.

Making Hannah a Cargo Account

I have her log in details. Hannahrampley.com which is run on tumblr will transfer across to cargo, and her tumblr will carry on being used as a blog.

Screen-printing and Embossing

Spoke to Hannah today and we have sorted out business cards and packaging. We're having a meeting next we to talk about FMP branding and her mail out book. 

I created a mock-up mail out for Hannah that could be sent out to people she would like to work with or as promotion to companies that could buy her collection. They would also be used as a promotional tool showing off her illustration and textile in one small hand-size sample. They would be received in the post with an attached business card, wrapping in pineapple tissue paper. 

The plan was to create 10 of these portfolios for Hannah, with her new FMP collection 'A Visionary Utopia'. However Hannah's collection will only be fully complete a week before my final deadline. So I will use this mock-up to photograph for submission and if Hannah still wants these creating after FMP I will create them with her final textile samples and selection of illustrations.

Hannah has altered the CV and added at least 10 more lines of text... this have meant a re-shift around of the design. She would like her logo to be printed, not stamped. We have discussed that she will be using DL envelopes so her logo, contact info and description must be visalbe and as close to central as possible as this is the first thing anyone will see when receiving it in the post.

I used the ellie poo and rhino poo 110gsm stock to test Hannah's CV

Hannah's chosen Rhino Poo, which is surprising 110gsm, although it feels much more like 200gsm +. We both like the thick texture and the fact that it is more brown than off-white. 

The idea behind this design (above) is that Hannah can use her stamps in the slim left column. This would run across all the range: letterhead, c slip, contract, etc.

The breakdown of this week for Hannah's brief:

Tuesday

I will set up screen's for Hannah's A5/ A4 and A3 notebook covers.

A3: These would be a front cover, and would be attached with material in the bind like Hannah's Mock-up mail out. This could be screen-printed onto one of the GFSmith 3 colour stocks.

A4: These are a A3 cover (front and back) screen-printed that would be folding in half and stapled to the existing college sketchbooks. This could be screen-printed onto one of the GFSmith 3 colour stocks, or off white.

A5: This is a A5 notebook, that would have lines inside. I would screen print a smaller pineapple design onto the Rhino poo stock and would bind together with a small material of Hannah's textiles and would be Japanese bound.
