Final Crit

Today was the final Crit.
After feeling not too bad about it last night. I went to bed and woke up at 10:30. The crit started at 9:30. For the past two months I've had really bad eczema and now I can't sleep because of it.
So I had no feedback for the crit, but it helped being around peoples work and seeing where everyone else is up to. A few people have told me they like my Design Context book which is nice. I now know exactly what I have to do. It is a lot but I think I will get through it all. So here is another list:
Brief 1: type posters PACKAGE
Brief 2: Print letterheads and cv. Make textile sample PACKAGE
Brief 3: Event, Posters, Tickets
Brief 4: START
Brief 5: Help Chris tomorrow mock - up a book and print the poster
Brief 6: Print Posters and Postcards
Brief 7: FINISHED

So brief 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 and nearly finished. I will have everything finished (and printed) for Monday at the VERY VERY latest.

So that from Monday (maybe before) onwards I can start and complete Brief 4 (DRUGS) and finalise Brief 3.

I have a photography student  photographing my final work on Thursday the 23rd. 6 days before deadline. Which gives me a lot of time to finish of my boards, and my PPD: portfolio and branding.

So much to do. But I think it is do-able.

The Crit with Fred

This went surprisingly well.
Basically....
Brief 1 (Séarlait) expand so it is two: branding & full typeface use.
Brief 3 - Hunter Gatherer, make full use of illustrations and use colour.
Brief 2 (Hannah), Brief 5 (Fashion Yearbook) and Brief 7 (Mosses Centre) Finish them for next week making sure when Inhand in they look consistently branded in a pack.
Brief 4 - DRUGS use colour. Going to make this a significant brief
Brief 6 - Context could be posters..... but I want to make a book.

Finish Brief 1, 2, 5, 7 for next week, so I can focus on Brief 3, 4 and 6

Monday, 8 April 2013

Planning some more.

With less than 2 months left... 7 weeks to be near exact.
It makes me want to cry.... so I made a list of everything I have to do.
Whilst working at home over Easter I managed to put together all of my final boards. So to do a short summary I have to photography Séarlait's and Hannah's branding (Brief 1 & 2)... then that is finished. I have submitted The Mosses Centre (Brief 7)
I am working with Chris Van, Cherry and Kirsty F on the Fashion yearbook which has now been scrapped to the 2nd choice. We are all working on poster designs and will have the final content on the 15th of April. (Brief 5)
So that leaves:
Hunter Gathers (Brief 3),
ISTD Books Still? DRUGS (Brief 4)
and Design Context (Brief 6).

I am creating the smaller guide today for Brief 3. I will print it this week and continue to gather all the content and design for the full publication. In this is need to create a mock up exhibition. Creating posters that focus on a certain group / person who survives somewhere in the world.

For DC (Brief 6) I am defining my final studio choices. I hope to get some answers to my questionnaires back asap.

Submitting The Mosses... plus Photographing

Project Description:
This is a re-brand of the large Charity Community Centre, named the Mosses Centre. It is an important cornerstone for the community of Bury. The identity is carried across: Business Cards, Stationery, the Cáfe Menu, the Annual Report and a Website proposal.

Project Background:
The Mosses Centre has been running for over ten years and is entirely self-supporting. However, it has never had a distinguishable brand. To get further financial support, more volunteers and a greater sense of unity, the centre needed a prominent visual identity.

The Mosses Updated

Printed out some business card examples today for The Mosses Centre.
I have 2 print slots books for Thursday, here I will print: the annual report, final business cards, cafe menu and the covers for leaflets and mock up posters.
I have completed: The Cáfe Menu, The Annual Report
I need to: Posters, Stationary, signs, website, finalise:The Business cards.
I have booked out a photo studio for this friday where I will take photographs for my final boards, I will  submit the boards Friday night.

Business cards
I was torn between the segment designs or the plain type over the images. I think I will go with the segments because it ties in with the entire brand and pushes the idea of 4 key areas. I will use more than these 4 images and print a wider variety on Thursday. I think i will incorporate the 4 colours on the info side of the card too, but I'll test it out.

Cáfe Menu
The design was originally A4, but after printed a slimed A4 version looks and handles so much better. I will try and fix the problem of 2 images on a line and will look at using different photographs of sandwichs or adding it at the top as a everyday choice.
I have lazer cut on 6mm piece for plywood to use as a board to clip the menus to, so much better than loose piece of paper.

The Mosses Centre Annual Report

After printing everything for the first time I could see a few really annoying errors.
1. All of my images where not the same width.
2. All images did not start at the same point after the title.
3. Some spreads just didn't work, Especially pages 4-5.
I feel like I have corrected that.
Right now I just don't like the cover.

Branding Development

Branding Development sent to Pete on the 7th March

Pete's Feedback
Page 1 & 2. Would like to see Pastel Colours, less bright, less garish. Would like to see a black and white version. Love "BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER" strap line.

Page 3/4 Would not use the Business cards as a way od splitting the Mosses Centre. But he loves the photography and simple segment designs. He gave me the correct business card info.

Page 5/6/7
Like the segments as patterns and this could be a great cover for the annual report or for a leaflet.
More sent to Pete on the 7th.

Pete's Feedback
Logo in Black & white looks too much like the Methodist Christ Symbol (image below). Try to make it look less like this.

Page 2 & 3 he prefers the top left (larger circle and bigger gaps)
Really loves the just type over the photograph business card. try and add in the 4 words.
Page 5... try and get the full logo onto them because the 4th segment is confusing.
More sent to Pete on the 8th.

The Mosses Centre Feedback.

Pete Emailed me back.
This is what he said:
So basically he prefers Option 1. He wants the 1/4 circles and full circle in the logo to be bolder. He likes the stap-line "We are whatever you need us to be", and also "Bringing Communities Together". He uses Arial as a main typeface.

I spoke to Andy Lodge
He said he likes the idea and the division of the centre by using the 4 words. But like Pete he says it needs to be bolder and more use of the colours. He says what I have designed books good, but I can see what he means because it is quite designey (if you can understand that).
It needs to be incorporated into the images like Melbourne Identity
NOT MY IMAGES BELOW (INSPIRATION).
Bad images
Looking at my designs he said the images are terrible (which they are). So he gave me a lot of photographers to use as stock images for the  charity award submission.

Finding Images
I need images for each section:
Enjoyable,
Educational,
Friendly,
Supportive.

The Mosses Centre Initial Logo & Branding Ideas

Subdivisions are hard to think of:
EAT
FUN (ENJOY / RECREATIONAL)
LEARN
FRIENDS
SUPPORT

Choosing between Fun and Enjoy. I think Fun sounds much more positive than enjoy, yet enjoy is more relevant towards adults.
I sent this to Pete:

A lovely long list ...

Mosses Centre Competition Brief

The Brief:

Graphics & Advertising: A re-branding exercise

- For example, a re-branding of a charity
or an advertising campaign
- For example to communicate the service supplied by the Missing People charity
The Reward: The top 3 winning students from each category will be invited to an exclusive award ceremony, with a one off opportunity to network with highly sought after professionals and award winning judges from the creative industry. In addition, internships, placements and bursaries will be offered to the students of the winning concepts.
Requirements: Full names of candidate/s, Full names of tutor/s, Name of college or university at which the candidate studies. Work submitted should have a 200 word brief accompanying it, outlining how the work will communicate a positive message for their chosen cause, and what deliverables will be produced as an outcome. The brief should be submitted by filling in the brief section of the entry form. MUST BE UNDER 15MB.
I got this email today and it made me annoyed I haven't seen it before. It's such a good opportunity, that I thought I have done nearly all of the design for brief 1&2 that I could quickly do my Mosses Centre brand in about 3 weeks (if Pete gives me all of the info asap). I could enter that branding into this competition... and hopefully win!

21st February Crit

Feeling pretty positive
Not being big headed, but I think compared to a lot of people in the group I had a good amount of work to show and the most annoying thing about these sort of situations are that I have so much more background work... I have all of my stock ordered... I just need to carry on making.
I didn't really get any feedback that helped me, or told me something that I didn't know. So a pretty pointless crit... but at least I have done work.

12th February CritL: Andy Lodge

Feedback
I need to keep sending off to lots of stock companies to get a lot of free samples. So I have examples for clients and as reference. Order Fedrigoni. and Garnett based in Otley.
Geometry of Pasta interesting iconography.
Hannah Logo needs to be more consistent, I need to make the pineapple less sharp edged or make the type more sharp to make them fit better together. Push the material promotion.
Séarlait... get the type together. do examples for this week on how it can be applied.... make business cards. Get promotion together.
It's a case of gathering content for Brief 3&4. And creating a identity and style. In brief 3 I need to start categorising content and get the publication layout sorted.
Brief 4 I need to get content and know what I am going to make. Info-graphics. Find a lot of facts.
Brief 5 we are waiting to meet the fashion team.... I feel this will take a while.
Brief 6 I need to contact people.
Brief 7 (The Mosses Centre) - Andy said I should layout the brief and know what I should do and leave the major designing till later when I have the other briefs underway.
Additional Brief 3: Geordan ECLECTIC, basically just do designing as it comes along.
