Final Crit

Today was the final Crit.

After feeling not too bad about it last night. I went to bed and woke up at 10:30. The crit started at 9:30. For the past two months I've had really bad eczema and now I can't sleep because of it. 

So I had no feedback for the crit, but it helped being around peoples work and seeing where everyone else is up to. A few people have told me they like my Design Context book which is nice. I now know exactly what I have to do. It is a lot but I think I will get through it all. So here is another list:

Brief 1: type posters PACKAGE

Brief 2: Print letterheads and cv. Make textile sample PACKAGE

Brief 3: Event, Posters, Tickets

Brief 4: START

Brief 5: Help Chris tomorrow mock - up a book and print the poster

Brief 6: Print Posters and Postcards

Brief 7: FINISHED

So brief 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 and nearly finished. I will have everything finished (and printed) for Monday at the VERY VERY latest.

So that from Monday (maybe before) onwards I can start and complete Brief 4 (DRUGS) and finalise Brief 3. 

I have a photography student  photographing my final work on Thursday the 23rd. 6 days before deadline. Which gives me a lot of time to finish of my boards, and my PPD: portfolio and branding.

So much to do. But I think it is do-able.

Everything is cancelled

I emailed Suzie the final fashion poster on Monday, she agreed to email me back the final amendments on Wednesday and sign it off. By Friday we had emailed and heard no response so me and Chris printed off the final Fashion Poster to scale and gave it to Suzie to try and speed the process along.
A week later me and Chris finally meet with Suzie, she tells us in a very complicated way that her students are not happy with the design. Even though previous Suzie had okayed the whole design and told us her students where happy with the layout. We where under the impression that the final sign-off was for checking spellings and contact information. 
In short she told use that instead of the poster I designed her students wanted a equal size photograph each with their own name and contact detail underneath. This is COMPLETELY different from anything we had shown her before and the designs she agreed upon so far.

After this meeting we me and Chris went straight to Amber to ask what to do next. Amber met with Suzie the next day to find out that Fashion students themselves had designed their own version of a yearbook and they were already working on creating a poster. Suzie had not told us, even though this had been going on for a month. 

The end result was the yearbook was completely scraped, even including a pdf to put on the Leeds College of Art website. 

As a group we decided to mock up a full yearbook and photograph the fully designed poster. We have all spent to much time in meetings and designing to completely drop the brief.

The Crit with Fred

This went surprisingly well.
Basically.... 
Brief 1 (Séarlait) expand so it is two: branding & full typeface use.
Brief 3 - Hunter Gatherer, make full use of illustrations and use colour.
Brief 2 (Hannah), Brief 5 (Fashion Yearbook) and Brief 7 (Mosses Centre) Finish them for next week making sure when Inhand in they look consistently branded in a pack.
Brief 4 - DRUGS use colour. Going to make this a significant brief
Brief 6 - Context could be posters..... but I want to make a book. 

Finish Brief 1, 2, 5, 7 for next week, so I can focus on Brief 3, 4 and 6

Alternative Foiling

A meeting the Tony the print man today put a bit of a dampener on our foiling idea. Basically to have all of the numbers and names foiled he woud have to make a A0 foiling board... which is ridiculously too expensive. 

After speaking to Chris and Kirsty we have decided to ask for the full box type on both posters to be foiled that is about 150x250mm (times 2).

If that's to expensive we will just have both titles foiled.

I've sent to poster asking for her to proof it and give us her contact info so that can go in the foiled text bit. 

Tony wants the final artwork by wednesday.... all printing of the yearbooks has been delayed by a month (not our fault). So everyone is keen to get printing and finished!

I drew the short straw...

so after the horrible meeting with Suzie on Monday we were told we were rubbish and her 12 year old daughter could have done better... 

Me and Chris did a lot of variations and he printed what we thought was the strongest.

Because of this Suzie says we have done no work, and basically its like a petty argument. 

So I have done 4 more designs based on what she wanted: a lot of negative space, a equal view of everyones work and using the year, but keeping 'Fashion' as the main focus.

Fashion Poster Critting and Moving on

Don't have the names up top. I think it needs a more free layout, all writing at the top and all images below looks boring. Making it more interesting.
I printed out my designs so far fitting to A4 format.... very cute.
This has helped me understand what the poster needs to do as a job. I spoke to Chris and we both think the names are pretty irrelevant. The idea of having a poster seems pretty messed, because Suzy clearly doesn't know what it's purpose is. I feel like it is either a advertise the course or a celebration for the students who have graduated ... but I can't see the point of printing so many, unless they are used as a link to the website or more info. Another thing... The format is rubbish. 420 x 840cm is not good.

Planning some more.

With less than 2 months left... 7 weeks to be near exact.
It makes me want to cry.... so I made a list of everything I have to do. 
Whilst working at home over Easter I managed to put together all of my final boards. So to do a short summary I have to photography Séarlait's and Hannah's branding (Brief 1 & 2)... then that is finished. I have submitted The Mosses Centre (Brief 7)
I am working with Chris Van, Cherry and Kirsty F on the Fashion yearbook which has now been scrapped to the 2nd choice. We are all working on poster designs and will have the final content on the 15th of April. (Brief 5)
So that leaves:
Hunter Gathers (Brief 3),
ISTD Books Still? DRUGS (Brief 4)
and Design Context (Brief 6).

I am creating the smaller guide today for Brief 3. I will print it this week and continue to gather all the content and design for the full publication. In this is need to create a mock up exhibition. Creating posters that focus on a certain group / person who survives somewhere in the world.

For DC (Brief 6) I am defining my final studio choices. I hope to get some answers to my questionnaires back asap.

Fashion Yearbook: Poster Design

Initial Design

Working on the last meeting we all had with Suzy she said for the poster she wants a side for each course: Fashion & Design and Fashion & Innovation. The type for the names and contact detail will be the same treatment as the PDF. In this case the same as the designed front cover, Names: Uppercase Brandon Grotesque. Details: Italic Garamond. I liked this idea... but I tried to work with the actual images we had.... and they are pants. So I wanted to create a better structured grid. 

Using a Square Grid
I really like this grid. Using the rules of Squares: images will fill one or 2 stacked horizontally / vertical squares and 4 squares. This can be easily applied and perfect for the grid of the pdf.... where images will be square or extra long or extra wide. I think the structure works well. We could create a number system where images of peoples work could like to contact info.... if that is what they wanted. We do not have to include all people designs, just the strongest. 

Adding in Images
Using images from last year I wanted to show how cropping could be used to show the garments along with the traditionally very strong fashion shoots.
Deleting some squares from the Grid
This example shows how some images can be deleted from the Fashion & Design side..... the images that are deleted will be on the Innovation side and the images on the Design side will be deleted on the Innovation side as well. This links to the concept of being one course together.

What I need to Finish

Today I have designed all of my final boards for submission... very early, but now I know exactly what I have to do, and what I need to photograph. I have nearly finished both Séarlait's and Hannah's Branding brief.
For Séarlait's:
I have to Print her Portfolio and letterheads, Cv and Compliment Slip and Sticker more tools, lazer cut pencils and photograph all of the final products.

For Hannah: 
I have to make her website on cargo, order moo cards, create her mail out, print everything and photograph. This has to wait on her creating her FMP patterns. So as of now I cannot do anything.

Design Context: 
I need to email my questionnaire to all of the other studios I did not mail. 
I need to gather all of my content... but I want to wait until I hopefully get responses.

Hunter Gatherers:
Get all the content soon! Know what bind I will use. Start to draw / sketch images for the publication
Gather the content for the survival guide. 

ISTD: 
Gather Content.
Think about the publication layout.

Fashion Yearbook:
It's still up in the air if we will actually do the yearbook. It's looking like we may drop the whole brief.

It was a bit of a disaster, 22 people have sent in work. There are 4o people on the Fashion and Innovation course. Fred is threatening to end the publication if we do not get content by friday. We have no idea when we will get interview information... maybe never. Fingers Crossed it comes in soon!

On the plus side Chris presented this PDF and it was really good. I think everyone in Fashion Level 06 finally gets what we mean.

We discussed content and concepts
We will come up with a title for the yearbook, we don't want to call it Ba Hons Fashion & Innovation, we feel this looses all of the magazine feel we are trying to create.

21st February Crit

Feeling pretty positive

Not being big headed, but I think compared to a lot of people in the group I had a good amount of work to show and the most annoying thing about these sort of situations are that I have so much more background work... I have all of my stock ordered... I just need to carry on making. 

I didn't really get any feedback that helped me, or told me something that I didn't know. So a pretty pointless crit... but at least I have done work.

Meeting Fashion yearbook 1

Some really exciting news. Suzy and Paul want the yearbook to be more like a magazine rather than a nice momento for students to keep. We all agreed this was a great new approach. I just worry that we will not get all of the content in time.... as this is drastically harder than creating a portfolio for each student. 

But as Suzy said this needs to be a piece of work we are proud of and is cutting edge graphic design as well as showcasing cutting edge fashion and innovation.

I am going to research into some magazine they suggested.
